Why fragrance-free matters for a color cosmetics launch
Fragrance is still the leading category of ingredient reported in cosmetic adverse reactions, and lip products are applied close to the mouth and to skin that is already more permeable. Many first-time brand owners therefore start with a fragrance-free line to reduce sensitivity complaints, to appeal to clean-beauty buyers, and to keep the ingredient list short and easy to defend. For a manufacturer, fragrance-free is also a cleaner specification: fewer masking agents mean colorists work with the pigment system directly, which usually improves shade accuracy between batches.
What you should actually ask before you brief a fragrance-free order
Most confusion comes from mixing up separate claims. Treat each one as its own formulation decision and document it separately:
| Claim you want | What it requires from the factory |
|---|---|
| Fragrance-free | No added perfume, flavor or synthetic aroma; usually no essential oils |
| Scent-free | No detectable odor, including naturally occurring ones |
| Paraben-free | An alternative preservative system, verified in the final INCI list |
| Hypoallergenic | No formal legal standard; risk-managed ingredient selection and testing |
If you only need one claim on the label, fragrance-free is the one buyers understand immediately and the easiest for a supplier to document. If you need scent-free specifically, say so, because a natural ingredient can still carry a recognizable odor.
How fragrance removal changes a lip formula
Removing fragrance is not simply leaving a blank line on the ingredient list. Aroma compounds often act as mild solubilizers and contribute to how a formula feels as it is applied. Without them the color team typically adjusts the emollient ratio and may replace a scented carrier oil with an unscented one. The practical effects a brand should expect:
- Lipstick (bullet): the wax and oil base is rebalanced so the bullet stays firm in a warm market and still breaks cleanly.
- Lip gloss and lip oil: unscented base oils are selected for slip and gloss; a tiny amount of emollient prevents a waxy film.
- Lip balm: the carrier is unscented, so any natural note from an added butter or wax stays in the ingredient list and must be labeled correctly.
Packaging and labeling that matches a fragrance-free claim
The claim lives in the ingredient list, so the packaging should support it rather than contradict it. Avoid printing "naturally scented" anywhere on the label if the formula is fragrance-free. For private label work, foil stamping or a simple printed label keeps unit cost low at a small order size, while a custom printed tube gives a more premium finish once volumes are higher.
If the finished product is going to a regulated market, confirm which documents you need before the sample stage. A US-bound line follows FDA cosmetics rules including the MoCRA safety substantiation and adverse-event reporting obligations, while a European-bound line needs a responsible person, a Product Information File and registration in the CPNP. The manufacturer can supply formulas, INCI lists, safety-assessment inputs, MSDS and GMPC or ISO 22716 certificates to support that process.
Three labeling mistakes that undo a fragrance-free claim
Most problems with this claim appear on the front of the pack, not in the formula. Watch for these three patterns before the label is printed:
- Flavor words. "Vanilla", "berry" or "mint" are treated as flavor descriptors. If they appear on a fragrance-free balm they should be backed by a flavor system, not left as decoration, or they should be removed entirely.
- Natural-scent language. "Naturally scented" and "scented with essential oils" directly contradict a fragrance-free or scent-free statement.
- Vague clean-beauty claims. "Gentle" or "sensitive-skin friendly" are not the same as fragrance-free and should not be used as a substitute for it.
Because label artwork is one of the few costs that is very hard to change after production, review the exact wording with the factory against the final INCI list while the packaging file is still open.
How to verify the claim on a sample before approving bulk
Request the final INCI list alongside the physical sample and check it line by line rather than taking a verbal confirmation. Look for added aroma chemicals, perfume notes, essential oils and flavor descriptors, and confirm that any ingredient kept for its own function is still listed correctly. Ask the factory to explain any entry you do not recognize before the sample round closes, because it is much cheaper to clarify one ingredient at the sample stage than to reprint a label after bulk.
Keep a short record of what you asked and what was answered. If the same line is described two different ways between the brief and the sample, treat that as an early warning and settle it in writing before the production order is placed.
How to brief ARIS for a fragrance-free line
- Product category and finish: lip balm, bullet lipstick, lip gloss or lip oil, plus sheen level.
- Exact claims you want on the label, and which ones are optional.
- Target shade count per SKU and your quantity per shade.
- Target market, so the documentation set is prepared correctly.
- Reference products or reference photos for color and texture.
- Packaging direction: stock tube with label, or custom print.
Send that brief over WhatsApp and ARIS will come back with a per-SKU MOQ, a lead time and a sample plan before anything is produced. Keeping the sample stage tight is what turns a fragrance-free promise into a product that ships on time.

FAQ
What exactly counts as fragrance-free makeup?
Fragrance-free means no added perfume, flavor, masking fragrance or synthetic aroma compound. A product can still use naturally occurring scent from an ingredient, but for a true fragrance-free claim manufacturers usually formulate without essential oils and aroma chemicals as well.
Is fragrance-free the same as paraben-free or hypoallergenic?
No. Fragrance-free is one specific formulation choice. Paraben-free refers to a preservative class, and hypoallergenic is not a legally defined standard in the US or EU, so each claim needs its own formulation and documentation approach.
Does fragrance-free lipstick cost more to produce?
Slightly. Removing fragrance lets the pigment and binder system carry scent character that would otherwise be masked, so colorists adjust the recipe and may add a small amount of emollient to keep the finish smooth. The unit cost change is usually small relative to the whole bill of materials.
Can ARIS make fragrance-free lip balm, lipstick, lip gloss and lip oil?
Yes. All four categories can be formulated without added fragrance. ARIS can also prepare a simple fragrance-free ingredient checklist so you can review every component before production starts.
How many units do I need to order fragrance-free products?
It depends on the format and packaging. For a standard first launch the lip MOQ starts at 12,000 pcs per SKU; for smaller 1โ3K trial runs we reuse a stock tube or bullet with a gold or silver foil label instead of custom printing. Send ARIS your target quantity and finish and you will get an exact per-SKU MOQ.
